teaching of english-secondary education

Students interested in teaching English at the high school level need to be aware that advanced planning is crucial. The Secondary Education option is actually considered a “minor” and offered through the College of Education by application only. After completing a variety of prerequisites, students generally apply in February of their sophomore year to start the minor their junior year. Phyllis VanLandingham is the academic advisor for all Secondary Education programs within the College of LAS. Her office provides info sessions periodically during the school year. For additional info please contact Phyllis at 333-2800, or e-mail vanl@uiuc.edu.

Students in the “TOE” option (teaching of English) work through the English literature curriculum (which is slightly different than the major one) while completing curriculum and instruction courses. The spring term of senior year is reserved for student teaching which means all coursework must be completed in seven semesters (and summers if necessary). Due to the complexity of course sequencing and scheduling, students interested in this option need to seek advising early and often through both advising offices.
