About the English Advising Office

The English Department staffs two full-time academic advisors to serve students who major in English literature, English-Secondary Education, Rhetoric Creative Writing, and students who minor in English literature.

Bob Steltman and Claire Billing have office hours in 200 English building:

• Walk-ins: Monday through Friday from 9:00-11:30
• Appointments: Monday through Friday from 1:00-4:00.
• For appointments, please call advising secretary Maureen Airsman at 333-4346.

Bob and Claire provide orientation and registration advising for students entering the University as freshmen or transfer students. After initial contact, academic advising is voluntary except for mandatory freshmen advising for spring term. We do encourage all majors to visit our office each semester or year to be certain they are on track as they progress through their degree. We especially urge graduating seniors to see us before they register for their final year and semester.

Bob and Claire are also Study Abroad advisors for majors and all students taking English courses abroad for credit. Students see us to approve courses before and/or after studying abroad.

The advising office has a variety of information of interest to majors including:

• Curriculum lists for our majors/minor
• General Education lists (yes, on paper!)
• English honors program overview, rules, and thesis contracts (Engl 391)
• Independent study forms (Engl 290)
• Course description booklets for each term
• LAS rules for intra or inter college transfers
• English Department scholarships

Several bulletin boards just outside and inside the office hold timely posters and notices of interest to majors.

NEW! CAREERS AND GRADUATE SCHOOL INFORMATION ROOM

An entire room in our office has been reserved for students thinking about careers in English or Creative Writing or going to graduate school. The room has four computers available to use for browsing bookmarked URL's we've found useful to our majors. Please stop by to take a look.
