APA Format: Translated Works

An English translation of a text typically appears as follows:

Freud, S. (1970). An outline of psychoanalysis (J. Strachey, Trans.). New York: Norton. (Original work published 1940)

Begin with the last name of the author, followed by his or her initials. The date of the translation's publication comes next,in parentheses. The title should be italicized, but only the first word is capitalized. The initials of the translator, his or her last name, and the abbreviation "Trans." should appear in parentheses after the title. The place of publication comes next, followed by a colon, then the publisher. The original publication date is the last portion of the entry and should be in parentheses with the note "Original work published" followed by the date.
