RESEARCH GRANTS

Two-Year Research Grants
The Arete Initiative at the University of Chicago is pleased to announce a new $2 million research program on the nature and benefits of Wisdom. In 2008, up to twenty (20), two-year research grants will be awarded to scholars from institutions around the world who have received their Ph.D. within the past ten years. We seek to support highly original, methodologically rigorous projects from a broad range of disciplines: neuroscience, psychology, genetics, evolutionary biology, game theory, computer science, sociology, anthropology, economics, philosophy, ethics, education, human development, history, theology, and religion. Although individual projects will likely take root in a particular area or in two related areas, award recipients will participate in annual research meetings and quarterly conference calls with the other grantees and the Project Council, opening the door for richer conversations and enabling further collaborations.

If you have an interesting idea about how to study Wisdom, we encourage you to submit a short letter of intent (no more than three pages) by November 19, 2007. By February 1, we will let you know whether there is a fit between your proposed research and the Defining Wisdom project. Those selected by February 1 will be asked to submit a full proposal.

We hope the brevity of the Letter of Intent will enable you to think creatively and pursue questions that may stretch outside of your usual work---without having to commit the time necessary for a full proposal. We encourage you to think broadly about the possibilities.

The letters should briefly describe the research project with particular attention to the significance and methodological design of the project. For a description of the required letter of intent and more information about the Wisdom Project, go to: www.wisdomresearch.org or contact us directly at wisdom@uchicago.edu.
