Professor LeAnne Howe's latest novel, Miko Kings: An Indian Baseball Story, is forthcoming in September 2007 from Aunt Lute Books. Professor Howe will read from Miko Kings at the Illini Union Bookstore on November 14 at 4:30 p.m.

M.F.A. candidate Arley McNeney's debut novel, Post, was released in April from Canadian publisher Thistledown Press. Post will have its U.S. premiere in Septemer 2007. McNeney will read from Post at the Illini Union Bookstore on September 20 at 4:30 p.m.

Ninth Letter editor Jodee Stanley was awarded a 2007-8 Faculty Fellowship from the Academy for Entrepreneurial Leadership. The Faculty Fellows program offers support for teaching entrepreneurial courses across the Illinois curriculum. read more

U of I Writer-in-Residence Richard Powers was named a finalist for the 2007 Pulitzer Prize for his latest novel, The Echo Maker.

A new film short by Professor LeAnne Howe, Playing Pastime: American Indians, Softball, and Survival, co-produced with James Fortier, three time Emmy award winning filmmaker, was selected to screen at the American Indian Film Festival in San Francisco on November 7, 2006. read more

  On October 25, 2006, Professor Tyehimba Jess was named one of ten recipients of this year's Whiting Writers' Awards, announced by the Mrs. Giles Whiting Foundation in New York City. Now in its 21st year, the Award presents $40,000 each to emerging writers of exceptional talent and promise in fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and plays. read more

University of Illinois Writer-in-Residence Richard Powers was named a finalist for the 2006 National Book Award for his new novel The Echo Maker. The winner of this year's NBA will be announced on November 15 at the National Book Awards Benefit Dinner and Ceremony in Manhattan. read more

Professor LeAnne Howe's documentary Indian Country Diaries: Spiral of Fire premiered at the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of the American Indian on September 29, 2006, and will air on PBS throughout November. In the documentary, Howe travels to the North Carolina homeland of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians “to discover how their mix of tourism, community and cultural preservation is the key to the tribe’s health in the 21st century.” read more

Kim Chinquee (M.F.A. '04) received a Pushcart Prize for her short story "Formation," which was originally published in NOON. "Formation" will appear in The Pushcart Prize XXXI: Best of the Small Presses.

Professor Brigit Kelly was awarded a 2006 Guggenheim Fellowship. The John Simon Guggenheim Foundation awards annual fellowships based on distinguished past work and exceptional promise for future projects. read more
